I have put together a short "crib sheet" full of the basic terms and characters we have just reviewed. You might want to take it along with you if you get the chance to try out your shōchū skills in a real shop.
This is a side blog to my main Japanese whisky blog, Nonjatta. It is a little diversion to try to find out more about shōchū, Japan's indigenous distilled drink.
Shōchū is shockingly under explored outside Japan. There are hundreds of varieties and many high quality products. Language, history and economics have fostered the general ignorance. I hope this sideblog will help open the door an inch or two. Here is the feed, if you want to keep abreast of this sideblog:
And, if you are new to shōchū, you might want to look at my nifty basic course:
There are Japanese characters on this site. I try to display photos of the most important characters but to set your browser to read Japanese look at this entry.
Nonjatta - Shōchūis an offshoot of Nonjatta and is written by Chris Bunting. I am a 30 something British journalist currently living in Kanagawa, Japan with my wife and young son.
I try to abide by the Drink Bloggers Code of Conduct. If you feel the site has failed to live up to the code, please contact me and I will try to put things right.
